                                                    Vegetables

Dan West carries one of the largest selections of packaged flower and vegetable seed in the Mid South from Burpee, Ferry Morse and Livingston

seed companies. We also carry bulk vegetable seed for those of you who have larger gardens. You can buy it by the scoop (and there is a multiple

scoop discount) or there are price breaks on ¼ lb and 1 lb. packages.  The following chart will give you some basic information about the varieties

we carry in bulk, when to plant them, the days to maturity, how much seed you need for a 100’ row, spacing between the plants and between the

rows, how deep to plant the seed and how many days it takes for the seed to germinate.

Along with the seed, as soon as they are available, we carry seed potatoes, onion sets, asparagus roots, garlic bulbs, peanuts and of course, cabbage,

broccoli, cauliflower and other cool season sets.  After danger of frost, you can buy and plant tomatoes, eggplant and peppers or start them from seed

about the last week in February.

For any newcomers to vegetable gardening, here are a few tips to help you…

Check your pH – it should be at 6.5 – 7.  We can check it for you (it’s free), just bring about a coffee can full per sample.

Water thoroughly, deeply and infrequently for the deepest root development.

Avoid “over head” watering to help prevent disease.

Avoid working in the garden when it is wet from dew.  You can spread disease between plants on your wet clothes.

Beans &      You can increase your yield by planting double rows close together.

Peas  -         Go easy on the nitrogen, too much and you get gorgeous non-bearing plants.

Stake pole beans shortly after planting.  I like to use inverted tomato cages.

Once your corn is about 24” tall, plant a couple of pole beans at the base and let the corn stalk be the support for another crop.

Cabbage -    Keep some Dipel dust or Thuricide spray on hand for cabbage loopers.

& Greens     Side dress them with a little nitrate of soda after planting.

Corn -          Corn is pollinated by the wind, so plant many short rows side by side, not single long rows.

Do not apply pre-emerge herbicides like Treflan or Preen in areas where corn is to be planted.

Okra -          Plant late, after May 1.  Okra needs warm ground or it will rot.

Squash -       Keep the stem dusted with Dipel, from the ground up to 8” or so, to prevent squash vine borers.

Put a little pine straw under squash and melon fruit to keep them off the ground.

For the rose lovers out there, the 2011 Dan West Rose List is now available.  You can find it in the How To section of our website or just copy and paste this link:  http://www.danwestonline.com/howto.php

These are the roses we will be potting here.  We will have other varieties also that are grown elsewhere as they become available.

This was the December quiz…Once upon a time, back in the 1820’s, this dude named Joel was trekking through Mexico and he found a weed

he liked.  He brought it back to the U.S. and it has been found growing wild in Shelby County.  Any idea what it is?

It is the poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) and his name was Joel Roberts Poinsett.  It is a weed and the native one has been found growing here

in Shelby County. A little hybridizing and special growing techniques and you have a stocky little Christmas plant (about 60 million sold each year).

Here’s January’s test, what is the silver and green plant? (Picture taken in January.)

The contest ends on January 30th.  Drop by either store to enter or you can email your entry to

questions@danwestonline.com. One winner, selected from all correct entries, will receive a $25

Dan West Gift Certificate.
