Achillea - Yarrow - This is a great drought tolerant addition
to the sun garden that thrives in poor soil but needs good drainage. The
blue/green foliage is attractive even when the plant is not blooming. Some
reseeding is possible and it can become invasive. Flower heads can be dried
or used fresh in arrangements. Attracts beneficial parasitic wasps and
butterflies. Most are A. millefolium cultivars.

poisonous.

Agapanthus - Lily of the Nile - We can add this to the
perennial list because now we have cold hardy cultivars. Traditionally a
USDA zone 8 and 9 plant, now these cultivars are hardy to zone 6 and 7. May
cause vomiting if ingested

'Blue Heaven' - Very
large flowers and very profuse bloomer. Violet blue flowers and touted to be
zone 6 hardy, to 36" tall.

'Elaine' - Very dark
blue flowers and 48" or more tall. Zone 7 hardy.
|

'Midnight Blue' -
Dark blue and zone 7 (maybe 6) hardy, to 24".

'Peter Pan' - A pale
blue dwarf cultivar that grows to 18" tall. Zone 7 hardy.

'White Heaven' -
Very large flowers and very profuse bloomer. White flowers. I'm not
convinced the white is as hardy as it's blue namesake, but a great

Agastache - Hyssop - This is a great plant. It attracts
hummingbirds, butterflies and bees, foliage and flowers are aromatic and it
blooms from mid-summer into the fall. Fragrance varies from mint-like to
fruity to licorice, depending on variety.

Gray-green fragrant foliage with apricot orange flowers, 18" tall.

Alcea - A. rosea - Hollyhock - Not the easiest plant to
grow in the Mid South. They don't like our heat, poor soil drainage
(especially in the winter) and they are subject to leaf diseases and
insects. They are many cultivars available that grow from 2' tall to nearly
8'. Best planted where they are well drained, protected from the hottest
afternoon sun and out of strong wind. Available in single and double flowers
and in almost every color. Taller varieties should be staked.

'Chater's Double' -
A double flowering mix that contains apricot, yellow, red, white, pink and
maroon. Grows to 5' tall.

'Party Girl' -
Bright rose pink single flowers, dwarf plant to 24" tall.

'Powder Puff Mix' -
Double pink or white flowers to 8'.
|
|
'Queeny Purple' -
Single purple flowers to 24" tall.

|
Alchemilla - Lady's Mantle - This is an attractive perennial
with light green leaves and yellow flowers. This is as far south as it
grows, so protect it from the hottest afternoon sun. It prefers neutral to
slightly alkaline, moist, but well drained soil. Remove the old flower heads
to prevent seeding (it can be invasive) and it encourages some secondary
flowering.

'Thriller' - Superior midsummer performer. Fast growing, excellent cottage garden
addition.
|
|
Amsonia - Blue star - One of my favorites. Great plant for
the edge of the woodland garden but grows in full sun if the soil is moist
and well drained.

A. hubrichtii - Sky
blue flowers to 3' tall. Very thin threadlike foliage. Foliage turns golden
orange in the fall.

A. tabernaemontana -
Bushy plant with pale blue flowers to 2' tall. Yellow fall color.

Anthemis - A. tinctoria - Golden Marguerite - Clump forming,
short-lived, profuse flowering perennial with cream to yellow daisy-like
flowers. Must be grown in well drained soil, preferably with a significant
amount of sand or gravel. Not an easy plant to grow in the Mid-South.

Aquilegia - Columbine - This is another plant that
thrives at the edge of the shade garden. It needs 4-5 hours of sun to
perform well and it's considered a short lived perennial. However, it seeds
readily, so once you plant it, you've always got it. Attracts butterflies
and hummingbirds. Cut flowers may last 2 weeks.

Campanula - Campanulas can be low growing mounds of color

best results.

Centaurea - Cornflower - Silvery green foliage and Stokesia
like flowers. Grows in full sun and in any well drained soil. Needs staking
and should be pruned hard in the summer to keep plants compact. Grows to
36" tall and is a great cut flower. Most have flowers that are shades of
purple or pink, but there are some deep blue and even yellow!

C. dealbata - This
one has rosy/lavender flowers and is the most common.
|
|
Centranthus- Jupiter's beard - Upright woody perennial that
prefers poor soil. The flower spike is covered with small dark red flowers
to 3'. Seeds freely.
|
|
C. ruber - Sometimes
called 'red valerian'. Flowers from late spring through most of the summer.
Occasionally we see a white and a pink flowered cultivar offered.
|
|
Chrysanthemum - Mums are basically divided into two groups.
Exhibition types have numerous flower shapes, sizes and colors. They are
usually disbudded through the season to produce single large flowers. These
are the mums from the florist. For the garden, decorative or cushion mums
are the best choice. They branch freely, need little if any pruning, and
form a mound of color. Mums set blooms based on the length of the night. You
can, with a little planning, have mums in bloom from June until frost. Plant
early, mid, and late season varieties and use plants and structures to shade
beds where you want early season blooms. Garden mums are available in
white, pink, yellow, orange, burgundy, purple, lots of "in-between
" colors and flowers styles from pom pom to daisy. Plant in any well
drained sunny to part sun area with 5-6 hours or more of sun.

Coreopsis - Tickseed - Easy to grow sun perennials. Spent
flowers should be removed to encourage re-blooming. Pinks are a little
pickier about drainage. Don't let mulch or leaves accumulate on or around the
crown, especially through the winter.

C. auriculata nana -
Dwarf coreopsis. Bright yellow orange flowers only 8" tall. Spreads by
rhizomes.
|
|
C. integrifolia -
Fall blooming, bright yellow flowers to 12" tall. This one tolerates
moist to wet soil very well.

'American Dream' -
Light pink flowers with yellow center to 15" tall. Needs good drainage.
|
|
'Autumn Blush' -
Pale yellow flowers with a slight peach tint that darkens to a wine red
blush in the fall. Grows to 36".

Orange flowers, red center, 18". Profuse bloomer.

'Emberglow - Deep
scarlet flowers, yellow throat to 3 tall. Profuse bloomer.

Brilliant orange flowers with a ring around a yellow throat. Good cut flower
to 36".

'George Davidson' -
Large yellow/orange 3" flowers, to 36". Probably the best Crocosmia,
but they're all nice.

Orange/yellow flowers with a hint of red, to 36".

'Lucifer' - Bright
red flowers on slightly arching spikes to 4' tall.

'Swan' - This is a
different specie than most. Looks very similar in habit but it has large
orange flowers that have a pink tinged margin, to 36".

'Walburton Yellow' -
Yellow flowers to 3' tall. Profuse bloomer.
|
|
Delphinium - Larkspur - Produces tall spikes of flowers. Flower
height varies from 18" to over 6' tall. They're available in a wide
range of colors including white, cream, pink, blue, red, lavender and
purple. Difficult to grow in the Mid South. Plant where they are protected
from the hottest afternoon sun, in well drained soil and out of the wind.
Most varieties over 3' tall will require staking. Cut spent flowers to
encourage re-blooming.

'Blue Butterfly' - Rich, vibrant blue. This one
doesn't produce tall flower spikes. It's a compact plant to 18" with
flowers produced in the foliage. Not drought tolerant. This is probably the
hardest to grow in the Mid South.

Dianthus - Cheddar Pink - Very attractive blue green mound of
evergreen foliage with flowers held atop 6" -10" stems in a wide
selection of bloom colors. Some solid colors and many multi color
variations. Plant in a well drained area and keep the pH in the 6.8 - 7.2
range. Dead head spent blooms to prolong flowering. Although a sun loving
plant, foliage often looks better if protected from the hottest afternoon sun
and drought. Most still bloom well in part sun.

Produces a flower spike covered with small flowers, but not grown for the
flowers. Leaves are covered with tiny spines, mulch heavily in the winter
with pine needles. Do not allow to dry in the summer.

Gypsophila - G. paniculata - Baby's Breath - Hard to grow in the
Mid-South. Needs perfect drainage, especially in the winter, so plant it
very, very high and incorporate a significant amount of coarse sand. Prefers
an alkaline soil, so keep the pH near 7.2. Easily damaged, so plant it in a
corner where it can be left undisturbed.

Helenium - This is a tall, clump forming perennial with
2" daisy like flowers. Likes sun and moist to wet soils, grows to 5'
tall or more and requires staking. It can be cut back in May to shorten the
plant and increase flowers. Dead heading helps produce more flowers.
