Planting for Fall Color

and a glimpse of Spring

Hello again!  This month’s discussion is about fall color.  Before we get into which plants give us color, let’s talk a little about why and how this happens.  Leaves begin to turn colors in the fall not so much because of the cooler temperatures, but because of the length of the night.  Chlorophyll (the green pigment) breaks down in sunlight, so it is continually made by the plant.  When the amount of darkness reaches a certain point, the cells at the base of a leaf where it attaches to the stem begin to divide rapidly.  This causes a corky layer to form which traps sugars in the leaf and prevents the flow of water and nutrients into the leaf.  Without the nutrients, chlorophyll production slows or stops exposing other pigments. Carotene and xanthophylls are orange and yellow but are masked by the more predominant chlorophyll.  As the chlorophyll disappears, the yellow becomes visible.  Sunlight and plant enzymes convert some sugars to anthocyanin, the red and purple color of leaves.  The more acidic the sap, the more red color you get.  If it’s less acidic, you get more purple color.  This same process happens on apples that are red on one side and green on the other.

The intensity of the color is influenced by the weather.  Warm sunny days, cool nights and dry weather increases the concentration of sugars which increases the production of anthocyanin and gives you the best fall color.  Since not all plants start at the same time, and we have such a diverse range of plants in the Mid South, our fall color lasts for a month or more.   Not all plants contain or make other pigments.  Some just turn brown from tannin left in the tissue.

Here are some of the best fall color plants for the Mid-South.

We grow many of the perennials that we offer each spring, at our Hwy 64 location.  Here’s a peek at the varieties we are growing for the spring of 2009 (subject to supplier availability).  There are others that we are awaiting confirmation on and hundreds of other varieties that we purchase from other growers to complete our spring selection.

Most of the following will be offered in 3 quart containers and be retail ready in early April.  Quart and 4” perennials will be available in late February or early March, weather permitting.

With the holiday season rapidly approaching, this is a reminder to read the December 2006 newsletter about the care of holiday plants, cut and live Christmas trees and fresh greenery.  Our Fraser firs, fresh wreaths and roping will be arriving the weekend before Thanksgiving.

This coming weekend (November 8th and 9th) is our Christmas Open House.  We invite you to come and see one of the largest selections of quality artificial Christmas trees in the Mid-South.  Come and enjoy the refreshments and enter to win one of many door prizes that will be given away.

This was last month’s mystery plant.  It is a Trident Maple, Acer buergerianum.  This is a great, small to medium size tree for medians, sidewalk areas or small gardens. It grows to 30’ tall and 20’ wide.

Since we’re talking about fall color, here’s the mystery plant for November.  What’s the red vine attached to the tree?  Here are a few hints…

It’s related to cashews and ginkgo biloba and first described by Capt John Smith in 1609.

The contest ends on November 15th.  Drop by either store to enter or you can email your entry to questions@danwestonline.com.  One winner, selected from all correct entries, will receive a           $25 Dan West Gift Certificate.

Thanks again, for shopping with us at Dan West!  We really appreciate your business!
