Coming Attractions…

 

 

Welcome back.  As promised, this month we’re talking about new plants and products at Dan West Garden Center. Some are brand spankin’ new, some are just new to Dan West and some are just really cool and worth talking about. 

Baby Gem™ Boxwood - An exceptionally compact boxwood for smaller gardens. Excellent for borders and retains it’s dark green color throughout the year.  Due in around March 15th.

Solar Flair™ Euonymus – An improved selection of Gold Spot euonymus.  It has larger and brighter yellow centers. Some here, more coming.

Velma’s Royal Delight Crape Myrtle - A compact, upright variety that grows 3’ to 6’ tall with unusual magenta flowers.  Due in around April 1.

Rosey Carpet Crape Myrtle – Rose pink flowers cover this truly groundcover crape myrtle. It grows 3’ to 4’ wide but just a mere 12 inches high.  Some here, more coming.

Orchid Cascade Crape Myrtle – Another groundcover crape myrtle that grows like the one above, but with lavender flowers.  Due in around April 1.

Scarlet Firecracker Plant – We’ve had this plant before but I like it a lot.  This is a picture of one on my deck last August.  Hummingbirds love it and it blooms continuously from mid summer until frost.  Unfortunately, this plant is not winter hardy. Due in early April.

 

 

Kaleidoscope Abelia We had a few of these last year and sold out is just a few days.  This is a stunning variegated abelia. The foliage is yellow and green with tinges of pink, orange and red.  Bell shaped white flowers from late summer through fall.  First shipment due in mid March and more to come.

 

Antarctica Boxwood – A slow growing rounded cultivar that reaches 3’ in height and width.  Requires little trimming but tolerates shearing well.  Likes sun and tolerates moist soil, very cold hardy.  Due in mid March.

 

Julia-Jane Boxwood – A slow growing, full sun tolerant, Korean boxwood.  Deer resistant and very cold hardy, grows to 4’ tall.  Good replacement for Helleri hollies if you are having problems with black root rot.  Due in mid March.

 

Garden Glow Dogwood – A beautiful deciduous shrub.  Brilliant lime green summer foliage turns burgundy red in the fall.  Bright red stems in the winter.  Matures to 3’ tall and prefers partial shade.  Due in mid March.

 

Muskingum® Dogwood - Another shrub dogwood, this one has gray-green foliage that turns brick red in the fall.  It has creamy white flowers in the spring that smell like lilacs and stunning white berries in the fall and winter.  It only gets 2’ tall and this one prefers sun.  Due in mid March.

 

Toyo Nishiki Quince -  This isn’t new, but it’s stunning. Masses of white, pink and red flowers, all on the same plant.  In stock now.

 

Gro-Low Fragrant Sumac – This one is not new, just cool.  It has glossy foliage, yellow spring flowers, red fruit and orange to scarlet fall color.  It only gets 3’ tall but can spread to 8’ or more across. Likes sun and clay.  Due in mid March.

 

Tiger Eyes Cutleaf Sumac – New growth is a vivid chartreuse green changing to bright yellow in the summer.  Leaf stems are purplish-pink, quite a contrast to the lemon-lime foliage.  Fall color is yellow, orange and intense scarlet.  Likes sun and grows to 6’ tall and wide.  Due in mid March.

 

Golden Elf Spiraea – A true groundcover spiraea, only growing to 6” tall.  Golden yellow foliage spring through fall and doesn’t burn in full sun.  Due in around April 1.

 

Wisteria Blue Moon – This is a selection of the native Kentucky Wisteria. However it blooms 3 times a year.  First flowers appear in June and then again in August and September.  Rapid grower to 20’ per year, but not as aggressive as the Asian wisteria varieties. Due in mid March. 

 

Wisteria Clara Mack – Another native wisteria that blooms at a very early age.  Lush, bright green foliage and 7” – 12” white flowers.  Due in mid March.

 

Halo Hydrangea Series – Compact plants with picotee-edged flowers – Angel Robe™, Angel Wings™, Angel Smile™, Angel Eyes™ and Angel Star™.  Due in mid April.

 

Brigadoon Hypericum -  A low growing cultivar to 16” tall with bright yellow-orange foliage and 2” yellow blooms throughout the summer.

 

 

Perennials

 Most gallon perennials are due in, or will be ready, early to mid April.  Many are in stock now, but are dormant or just sprouting.  First quart perennials in mid March.

 

Red Velvet Yarrow – Deep wine red flowers on 36” stems.

 

Angelique Yarrow – Darkest scarlet red flowers of all. In stock, just breaking.

 

Fancy Frills Coneflower – (PP17209) A sturdy, bushy coneflower with 5” pink frilly blooms.

 

Fatal Attraction Coneflower – Fragrant, magenta-purple, upturned petals, held upright on a nearly black stem.  Grows to 16” tall.

 

Green Envy Coneflower – Light green flowers atop dark green foliage, to 36” tall.

 

Tiki Torch Coneflower – Bright orange flowers to 32” tall.

 

Tasmanian Tiger Euphorbia – (PP15715) Compact, round growth habit.  Variegated gray-green leafs with creamy white margins and bow-tie shaped bracts.  Likes sun, to 3’.

 

Baptisia Carolina Moonlight Not new, but a striking addition to the garden.  Blue-green foliage and creamy yellow upright flowers in May, 3’-4’ tall.  In stock.

 

Baptisia Twilight Prairie Blues – Unique deep violet purple, nearly copper flowers.

Astilbe Milk & Honey – Creamy white flowers mature to pink. Very heavy bloomer.

In stock now, but dormant.

 

Astilbe Sprite – Not new, but a personal favorite. A dwarf, profuse bloomer, to 12” tall.

In stock now, but dormant.

 

Coreopsis Jethro Tull – A deep yellow, heavy blooming variety.  Flowers from June until frost.  In stock now.

 

Coreopsis Little Sundial – A very compact dwarf variety, 12” or so, that blooms from June until fall.  Golden yellow flowers with a maroon center.  In stock.

 

Coreopsis Snowberry – White flowers, petal bases are maroon surrounding an orange eye. Grows to 2.5’ tall.  In stock.

Bleeding Heart “Candy Hearts” – Candy pink heart shaped flowers and a much longer blooming period than most bleeding hearts.   In stock.

 

Coconut Lime Coneflower – Really unusual flower.  White petals surround a lime green spiked cone with a brilliant orange center.  In stock, but dormant.

 

Eupatorium Phantom – A dwarf Joe-Pye weed. Matures around 30” tall.  In stock, dormant.

 

Geranium Tiny Monster – One of, if not the best, hardy geranium.  Nonstop bloomer and grows rapidly.  In stock, just breaking.

 

Shasta Daisy “Sunny Side Up” - Double rows of bright white petals surrounding the yellow center.  Compact grower to 18”.

 

Peony Dancing Butterflies – Deep fuchsia pink, lotus shaped flowers. In stock, just breaking.

 

Peony Lady Alexandra Duff – Cream colored double peony center surrounded by pink outer petals.  In stock, just breaking. 

 

Peony Primavere – Japanese style peony with creamy outer pedals and a very large yellow center. 

 

Phlox Flame Series , Lilac, Pink, Light Pink, Purple and White – A compact grower to 18” or so, lilac-purple flowers with a white eye, dark pink or light pink flowers with a red eye, dark purple flowers with a reddish purple eye or pure white.  In stock.

 

Phlox Mini Star – A dwarf variety to 12”, with rose flowers and a dark red eye.  In stock.

 

Phlox Pixie Miracle Grace – Compact plant to 20” tall, very long bloom period, mildew resistant. Lavender purple flowers with a bright white star shaped center.  In stock.

 

Phlox Pixie Twinkie – Similar to above but with baby pink flowers and a darker pink center.  In stock.

 

Jacob’s Ladder “Stairway to Heaven” – White leaf margins tinged in pink, pale lavender blue flowers.  Tolerates heat well.  In stock, but dormant.

 

Jacob’s Ladder “Touch Of Class” – A sport of Stairway to Heaven, with a very narrow white border on the foliage and pale pink buds that open to pale blue flowers.  In stock, but dormant.

Tomcat Mole Killer – A worm shaped bait for moles.

 

Systemic Insect Drench – We’ve had imidicloprid for a while in quarts, but now we have it in pints and gallons.  Just poured at the base of a tree and you get a full year control of many insects.

 

Aqueduct L&G – A new ready to spray product to help water penetrate our clay soil.

 

New items from Medina

 

Humate Liquid Humus, Hasta Gro Liquid Plant Food W/ Humates, Medina Plus- a micro-nutrient product derived from seaweed extract, and Hasta Gro for Lawns – a hose end ready to spray applicator.

 

Fast Acting Lime – Quicker and cheaper to use than palletized lime.  A 30 lb. bag covers 5,000 sq. ft. instead of 40 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. with pelletized lime.

 

ferti-lome Liquid Systemic Fungicide RTS – A great product available this year is a handy hose-end applicator.  It controls a wide range of diseases on trees, shrubs, roses, perennials and lawns and works as a growth stimulator on newly planted fescue for faster establishment.
